Wanda is a native of Washington, DC. While growing up in our Nation's Capital, she was surrounded by people of all ethnicities. Wanda's interest in art began when a neighbor gave her an enormous tin of pastels which she treasured and used almost daily. She drew as a form of entertainment and solace in her younger years.
Art was always one of Wanda's favorite classes in school and when she reached high school, she was able to create through various ways; printmaking, drawing, designing, painting, and sculpture. She was fortunate to have been instructed by Phillip Ratner, internationally known multi-media artist of the Ratner Museum, Bethesda, Maryland and Israel.
During her high school years, her work was showcased at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Washington, DC and at Lafayette Square across from the White House. The first piece of art she sold was from an exhibit on the National Mall.
Wanda graduated from Wheelock College in Boston, MA, with a BS in Early Childhood Education and a minor in Art. She went on to earn her Master's in Education from Loyola College in Baltimore, MD, with a specialization in Primary Montessori. Her career with the District of Columbia Public Schools spanned thirty-three years. During that time, Wanda took a one year sabbatical to teach in Bremerhaven, Germany for the Department of Defense.
Throughout the years Wanda participated in numerous art workshops and attended art classes at the Cathedral School of the Washington National Cathedral and The Maryland College of Art and Design.
Wanda's love for watercolor painting was inspired by artist Nancy Carver Thompson from whom she took classes. That exposure to watercolors became the inspiration to paint full time once she moved to North Carolina in 2007.
Since her retirement to the Carolina's, Wanda has taken classes with local artist Dennis Shook and well known watercolor artists Mary Whyte, Anne Abgott, Ken Goldman, Peggi Habets and Ted Nuttall. She continues to attend more classes and workshops to hone her painting skills.
Presently, Wanda paints from her home.
